After graduating from Melbourne University he undertook ophthalmic training at Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide and the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital where he served as Senior Registrar. He undertook further training in the United Kingdom including time as a consultant in the NHS.

James has been a long-term proponent of the public health system with an appointment at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, involved in the teaching of both ophthalmic trainees and medical students.
